Who we are

Two roofers who have been doing this since they left school

Southern Counties Roofworks is run by the two of us, and we are both on the tools. There is no sales team here. The person who comes out to look at your roof is the person who will be up there doing the work, which is the main reason we can tell you honestly what a job needs. Most of our work comes from people who have already been let down. Roofs repaired three or four times that still leak. Jobs quoted as a full replacement when a day of work would have fixed it. One customer had put up with a leak for over ten years before she called us. We are a new limited company, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. What we are not new at is roofing.

  • We survey the roof properly and tell you what we actually find
  • If a repair will do instead of a replacement, we will say so
  • We clear the site and take the waste away when we are done

Everything we do, in one place

We cover anything that is considered a roofer's job on a house. Pick the one closest to your problem and it will tell you how the work is done, what to expect and what it costs.

How a job runs

A full roof replacement takes about one to two weeks depending on the size of the roof. Here is what happens in that time.

We come and look at the roof

We get up and inspect it properly rather than guessing from the ground. Then we tell you what we have found and whether it needs doing.

Scaffold goes up and materials arrive

Scaffold is erected first, for our safety and yours, and the materials are delivered to site so the job runs without stopping.

The old roof comes off

We strip the existing covering back and check the timbers underneath while they are exposed. Anything rotten gets flagged before it is covered up again.

New felt, battens and covering go on

Proctor Air breathable felt, new battens, then the tiles or slates. Ridge and hip details are finished with a dry ridge system rather than sand and cement.

We clear up and hand it over

Site cleared, waste taken away, and your guarantee issued. We would rather leave the place tidy than have you remember us for the mess.

Straight answer

What a roof actually costs

Priced after we have seen it

We do not publish a price list, because a roof is not a product off a shelf. What it costs follows the size of the roof, its pitch, how easy it is to get scaffold around the house, and what we find once the old covering is off. We come and look, then we give you a written price for the actual job.

  • We look at the roof properly before we price it
  • The quote covers scaffold, materials, labour and taking the waste away
  • If a repair will do instead, we quote the repair
  • No charge for coming out and no pressure afterwards

The things people ask before they book

The worries that come up on the doorstep, answered before you have to ask.

  • Will you tell me if I do not actually need a new roof?

Yes, and we do it regularly. If a repair will get you another ten years we will tell you that, even though the repair is worth less to us than the replacement.

  • What happens to my garden and my drive?

Scaffold goes up first and the waste goes straight into a skip or a grab lorry. We clear the site at the end of the job, not the end of the week.

  • How long will my roof be open?

We strip and cover in sections, so the roof is never left open overnight. A full replacement is usually one to two weeks from scaffold to clear up.

What goes wrong when roofing is done badly

We get called out to fix other people's work often enough that these are worth knowing about before you accept a quote.

A repair sold as a replacement

The most expensive thing in roofing is a roof that did not need replacing. Ask what is actually wrong, and ask what a repair would cost, before you agree to a full strip.

Ridge tiles bedded on sand and cement

Mortar cracks, then it lets water in and the ridge tiles work loose. A dry ridge system is mechanically fixed and does not rely on mortar staying intact.

Lead work done in the wrong gauge

Lead that is too thin splits where it moves, usually within a couple of winters. Flashing and valleys are where most roofs leak and where corners get cut first.

New tiles over old felt and battens

Covering worn felt with new tiles hides the problem for a year or two. If the felt underneath has gone, the water still gets through and you pay twice.

Questions we get asked every week

How much does a new roof cost?

It depends mostly on the size and pitch of the roof, on how easy it is to get scaffold around the house, and on what we find when the old covering comes off. A bungalow and a three storey semi are not the same job. The only honest way to price it is to come and look at it, which is why we do that first and for free.

How long does a roof replacement take?

About one to two weeks, depending on the size of the roof. Scaffold goes up first, then the strip, the new felt and battens, the covering, and the ridge and flashing details. We clear the site before we leave.

Do I definitely need a new roof?

Often not. Plenty of roofs we look at need a section of flashing sorting, some ridge tiles re-bedding, or a few slipped tiles putting back. We will tell you which yours is. If the job needs doing, then it needs doing, but we are not going to invent one.

What guarantee do I get?

Every roof we install carries a 15 to 20 year guarantee, issued when the job is signed off. If something goes wrong inside that period you call us and we come back out.

Do you come out at night or at weekends?

No. We do emergency leak repairs and make-safe work, but we do them during working hours. If you have water coming in, call us and we will get to you as soon as we can in the working day.

What materials do you use?

British Standard materials throughout, fitted to manufacturer spec so the job complies with building regulations. Proctor Air breathable felt goes on every replacement, and we use Marley Modern tiles where they suit the property. We will tell you exactly what is going on your roof before we order it.
